The best winter pool covers for 2026

A winter cover is a different product from a summer one, and it is built for three loads a summer cover never sees: snow, standing rainwater, and the sideways push of ice on the pool wall. The fabric is heavier and is often quoted in grams per square metre rather than in deniers, which is the more useful unit because it describes the whole coated fabric rather than one yarn. The tie-down system is what does the work: a cable and winch through a hemmed edge on a steel wall pool, or eyelets and water bags on a frame pool. Water bags rather than solid weights, always, because a solid weight on a cover edge is a puncture waiting for a windy night. Then the two features that decide whether the cover survives to spring. Drainage: a cover that holds a hundred litres of meltwater is a cover being pulled into the pool, and the answer is either a mesh drain panel or a pump sitting on top. And the winter pillow — the inflated cushion that goes under the cover in the middle — which does two things at once: it crowns the cover so water runs off, and it gives expanding ice something compressible to push into instead of the pool wall.
