The best pool filter sand for 2026

Filter sand is the default medium of every sand filter and the cheapest consumable in the pool. Its specification is one number written as a range: the grain size, almost always 0,4–0,8 mm for the main bed, with 1,0–3,0 mm used as a support layer over the laterals at the bottom of the tank. That range is not a tolerance, it is the design — a graded sand packs into a bed with voids of a predictable size, and the voids are what filter. The second figure is the purity: pool sand is washed, kiln-dried quartz, and the silica percentage is stated by the makers who state anything. Ordinary builder's sand in a filter is a genuine mistake rather than an economy, because the fines wash straight through into the pool and the clay content cements the bed. Third, the charge weight, which the filter itself specifies — 20 or 25 kg for the common 450 mm tank — and which should be read from the tank rather than the bag. Then the thing sand does that glass does less: it rounds off. Every backwash tumbles the bed, edges wear, the voids change shape, and after three to five seasons the same tank filters visibly worse at the same flow.
