A telescopic pole is the handle every other maintenance tool plugs into, and the reason to treat it as a real purchase is that it is what fails: a pole that collapses under load drops a net full of leaves back into the pool, or a vacuum head onto a liner. Two numbers describe it — collapsed and extended length — and the one to choose on is extended reach against the pool: a 3,6 m pool needs about 3 m to reach the far floor from one side, and buying short means walking round. The specification that decides compatibility is the diameter standard at the head, and here the market is in inches while everything else is metric: 1¼" (32 mm) is the common domestic size and 1½" (38 mm) the heavier one, and a 1½" vacuum head does not clip to a 1¼" pole. The part that actually fails is the clamp: an external cam lever grips the outer tube and is serviceable; an internal twist-lock is tidier and is what slips once the tube is scratched. Then the wall thickness and the material — anodised aluminium on nearly all of them, with the thin-wall poles being the ones that bend permanently the first time a vacuum head catches a step.
