The best pool salt for 2026

Pool salt is the raw material a salt chlorinator turns into chlorine, and it is bought by the sack rather than the bottle: a 30 m³ pool at 4 g/l needs 120 kg in it before the cell produces anything. That arithmetic is the first thing to do, and it is also why the pack size and the price per kilogram matter more here than anywhere else on the site. The specification that decides quality is the purity, stated as sodium chloride percentage — 99,8 % and above is what the chlorinator makers ask for, and the reason is not fussiness: the impurities in lower grades are calcium and magnesium, which scale the cell plates, and iron, which stains a liner brown. The second is the additives, and the requirement is that there are none. Table salt and most water-softener salts carry anti-caking agents — ferrocyanides, silicates — which cloud a pool and can deposit on the cell. A listing that says "ohne Zusätze" or "additive-free" is making the claim that matters. The third is the grain: fine salt dissolves in hours, coarse pellets take a day or more and have to be brushed around rather than left in a pile on the liner.
